Presentation is everything

Presentation is everything

Presentation is everything but in this business it is the holy grail of recruiting. Whether you are being qualified for a job or you are qualifying someone in an interview process it is vital that you take this part very seriously. Your dress code should give off an image of cleanliness and well put together. Dress sharp for the job you want, not the job you have. Dress for success as the saying goes, it is critical to give off a great first impression. Whether your interview is held in person or on a video call make sure you are dressed professionally and your clothes are not dirty nor wrinkled. If you are interviewing from home, make sure your living space is clean and neat. They will relate your personal cleanliness and orderly living space to the way you handle yourself professionally. Most companies will assess and judge you by your every word so be concise, coherent and straight-forward. You have one shot to get noticed by video call or in person so stand out, smile, and make sure your presentation is on point from start to finish.

Once you finally get hired, you will be sourcing, qualifying, and interviewing candidates for potential positions. You are the gatekeeper to the company at this point. If a bad candidate slips through the cracks and gets hired they will be a reflection on you. It is important that you take your time in analyzing all your candidates, as it is a big investment to train, hire and potentially fire someone. You want to make the right choices and decisions so you can have a good track record of hiring quality individuals who will last a long time. Sometimes this task can be challenging depending if your employer has a large quota and metrics for you to meet but with the right amount of due diligence you can navigate through this smoothly. This is why checking a potential hire’s work history and background is essential. You want to check job references, reasons for leaving a previous employer and specific gaps on their resume. Acquire as much work documentation as possible so you can make a smart and educated decision on whether or not this person is a good fit for your organization.

Perception is everything. It helps to control the narrative and presentation from the start in order to have a desired result. Even if you already know what you're talking about you will still get much further if you are perceived to know what you are talking about and look the part. People need to see you a certain way in order for them to rely on you and invest their time in you. This is why your overall presentation is so important. It must reflect reliability, discipline and consistency at all times. If you are perceived to know more and have a stronger handle about a certain subject matter you will have an edge over another applicant. This is why it's not enough to just know the material but when you speak about it you must project an air of complete confidence so people perceive you as an expert in the field. Your energy, tone of voice, passion and enthusiasm for a position all play a major part in the hiring process. If you possess all of these things your chances at beating someone with a better resume are exponentially higher. Be more self aware and understand your audience completely. Study the hiring managers and the things they look for in past & present candidates so you increase your chances of success at every level.
